Pulp Time title
After three years inside, a man comes home to Austin with a new legal label and an old girlfriend who isn’t impressed. Bob Byington’s 2008 mockumentary — the Austin indie auteur of Harmony and Me and Somebody Up There Likes Me — follows Gabriel McIver’s hapless reentry: jobs that vanish, counseling that talks past him, a city that has already decided who he is. Kristen Tucker, Kevin Corrigan, Nick Offerman, Andrew Bujalski, and Richard Linklater turn up in Byington’s dry orbit. Shot like a community-access report that forgot to be pious, it is uncomfortable on purpose and funny in the same deadpan key as his other small features. Premiered at SXSW; not a sermon.
