A woman’s eye, a cloud across the moon, ants in a wound, two priests dragged across a parlor floor — images that refuse to explain themselves. Luis Buñuel’s 1929 short, written with Salvador Dalí when both were young and at war with reason, is the founding blast of surrealist cinema: sixteen minutes assembled from dreams, with no plot except the logic of the unconscious. Buñuel directed; Dalí collaborated on the scenario and the look. They had met in Madrid student days and, for this one reel, fused painter and filmmaker into a single act of provocation. Silent, banned and worshipped in equal measure, Un Chien Andalou is still the short that taught movies they did not have to make sense. This version has an all new surreal score by tomandandy.
