Then: Triumph Of The Will
The 1934 Nuremberg party rally, staged for cameras and then cut into a hymn. Leni Riefenstahl’s 1935 film, commissioned by the Nazi leadership after her Victory of Faith, is the most famous propaganda documentary ever made: airplanes over the old city, columns in torchlight, Hitler descending from the sky to a waiting crowd. Riefenstahl, already a star of German mountain films, directed, edited, and designed the coverage with cranes, tracks, and a precision that later filmmakers studied even as they rejected the cause. It is not a neutral record; it is the regime seeing itself as destiny. Essential as cinema history and as a warning about what craft filmmaking can serve.
